One of my classes that I took this fall semester was an art education course, and as a future art teacher I absolutely loved the class. We had to keep a binder for all our assignments and notes and we were given extra credit for personalizing it. Well I was bored one night and thought I would take my hand at trying to make my binder into the Necronomicon. It was October and I previously saw the new evil dead movie, so I was inspired. Here's the image I went off:
I liked the burnt look to this. So I turned on AMC's Halloween marathon and gathered my supplies.
Materials Needed:
1.A lot of newspaper
2.flour
3.water
4.hot glue gun
5.hot glue sticks (a lot)
6.paint
7.paint brush
8.cardboard
9.Binder
I placed several layers of newspaper on the floor in front of the TV.
Then I mixed my paper mache paste with flour and water in a bowl.
(You will use a lot of paper mache paste for this project.)
Once everything was gathered and set in front of me, I began:
Just layered newspaper like crazy. I wanted it to look like it was 3-D and not 2-D.
Then I used cardboard to construct the eyes and nose, then layered more newspaper to keep it in place.
Here is the finished front. Once I completely finished covering the whole binder with newspaper, the way I wanted it to look, it took two days to dry enough so I could paint it.
I painted and then used the glue stick to make a burnt like surface. The cardboard teeth were time consuming because the hot glue didn't want to dry quick enough.
I tried catching this thing on fire using a can of hair spray and lighter. I wanted to get it even more of a aged look, but the thing would catch or even show appearance of burns. Then to make matters worse, the thing molded after a week of creating it......I think I actually created the Necronomicon. It's burnt proof and it's alive!
This project took three days due to drying process from both the paper mache and the painting.
But fellow Monsters my book of the dead came out amazing. My teacher was impressed and had a great time grading it. I also got a lot of comments on it from my classmates. This Halloween I even had our theater daddy use it for his Crim part in our DHD shadow casting show of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
HOPE YOU FELLOW MONSTER ENJOYED MY CRAFT
